75 Years of Our Hospital
Our hospital celebrates 75 years of dedication to the multicultural neighborhoods of Miami-Dade County, Florida, and our journey to becoming a facility driven by compassionate care.
Commitment to excellence since 1950
As we celebrate our hospital, we reflect on our rich history and the journey that shaped us to be who are today.
Our hospital's history
In 1950, our hospital officially opened its doors to the public, following years of thoughtful planning and construction. The founders of our hospital were motivated by a commitment to serve individuals of all backgrounds and beliefs.
Archbishop Joseph P. Hurley, Bishop of St. Augustine, Florida, recognized a critical shortage of hospital beds in the county. He also saw potential in post-war Miami to emerge as a global hub for travel and commerce, particularly with South America and the Caribbean. This inspired him to meet the needs of the community through the development of our hospital.
Rapid growth
From the beginning, our hospital experienced rapid and sustained growth. By our fifth year, we had provided care to more than 40,000 individuals. Surgical procedures had increased by approximately 33% compared to the previous year, and nearly 6,000 infants had been delivered at our facility.
After years of continued expansion, including the addition of a cancer center and neurological intensive care unit (Neuro ICU), and the introduction of psychiatry services, our hospital established its obstetrical unit in 1980. By this time, more than 70,000 babies were born at our facility. Some other areas of growth include:
- An expanded Radiation Oncology Center
- Comprehensive rehabilitation unit
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging Center and Hyperbaric Center
- McCarthy Cardiovascular Laboratory
- New emergency room (ER)
- Nursing program
- Outpatient surgery center
Our hospital today
Today, our hospital stands as a vital part of the community. We remain deeply committed to fostering strong relationships with our medical staff and providing compassionate, high-quality care. As we celebrate our 75th anniversary, we take this time to think about our continuous growth, medical innovation and steady service to the people of Miami and beyond.
