After a two-year IVF journey, Elisha and Angel were finally preparing to welcome their daughter. As first-time parents, they knew they wanted to feel confident and informed — but the unknowns of childbirth still loomed large, especially when their provider moved all deliveries to HCA Florida St. Lucie Hospital over the summer. The family-to-be soon discovered that prenatal classes and a compassionate care team could make all the difference.

“My advice to anyone wondering about the kind of experience you’ll have is to take the class,” Angel said. “It was very helpful. Pretty much everything that happened for us was exactly how they explained it would go.” Elisha added, “You can walk around and see everything, so you don't stress yourself out.”

From breastfeeding techniques to diapering tips, the couple found the sessions both practical and reassuring. Elisha recalled, “Pat [the lactation specialist and class host] is amazing. Half of our class was breastfeeding, and the other half was swaddling, putting on a diaper and giving a bath, practical stuff like that. She answered everything we could think of.”

When it came time for delivery, Elisha underwent a gentle C-section — a choice made after learning their baby could weigh as much as 10 pounds. Clear drapes and early skin-to-skin contact promoted a more connected, intimate experience. “We did it,” Elisha said. “As soon as our baby was born, I didn’t want it to be too intense for her.” Mom and baby had an extended together and the care team ensured Angel was informed and present throughout the process, including being able to cut the umbilical cord.

From the pre-op nurses who greeted them with joy and jokes early in the early morning to the anesthesiologist who calmly guided them through each step, the couple felt surrounded by warmth and professionalism. “Everybody was absolutely wonderful. We couldn’t have asked for anything better,” Elisha said.

After the birth, the care team continued to anticipate their needs before they could even voice them. “They were one step ahead,” Angel said. “They already knew what was coming and had it done before we even asked.” When their daughter began cluster feeding for hours, a nurse gently reassured them, saying, “I know you’re exhausted, but this is good, I promise.” For the new parents, that kind of emotional support made a lasting impression.

“It was done so smoothly,” Angel said. “For this to be our first experience having a child, everything went well… we’re blessed. The entire staff, from top to bottom, made it so good and easy.”
