Orthopedic surgeon and surgical nurse honored as surgical excellence award winners
Sarasota, FL — Sarasota orthopedic surgeon John Thomas, MD, and post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) nurse Jewel Strickland have been honored by the HCA Healthcare West Florida Division as Surgeon of the Year and PACU Nurse of the Year. The surgeon and nurse were honored in a ceremony recently with their family members, colleagues, West Florida Division leaders and hospital leaders in attendance.
Dr. Thomas was nominated by several colleagues who work alongside him in the operating room at HCA Florida Sarasota Doctors Hospital. They wrote nominations about his compassion for patients, skill as a surgeon, commitment to safety and his community service. Dr. Thomas has visited local elementary schools teaching students about robotic surgery. The West Florida Division of HCA Healthcare has 170 operating rooms and 1,600 colleagues. More than 200 nominations came in for Surgeon of the Year, and Dr. Thomas was the clear standout. “This is very humbling, I have a great team here,” said Dr. Thomas after receiving the honor.
Jewel Strickland, RN, was awarded PACU Nurse of the Year and nominated by her peers and leaders for her willingness to help other colleagues, calm demeanor and her depth of experience and knowledge. In addition to working in the operating room, she has also worked as a flight nurse. Strickland was the clear favorite from 200 other nominations. “This is a true honor, I couldn’t do anything without my team here. I love the culture and the friendly, family atmosphere here…the hospital has always been my home,” said Strickland.
