A Sarasota family had a loved one who was critically ill on the progressive care unit at HCA Florida Sarasota Doctors Hospital. In a note the family wrote to hospital leaders, they said it was a stressful and vulnerable time. But they found calm, comfort, and caring from a special nurse, Gwen Vetter, RN.
“Gwen was the kind of nurse you never forget. From the time she walked into the room…she truly connected, listened and made us feel seen, heard and cared for as people,” wrote one family member. “Gwen shows a top-tier level of knowledge and experience in what she does…and made sure everyone felt cared for and supported,” added the patient. The family nominated Vetter for the prestigious DAISY Award. The award is one of the highest honors in nursing, recognizing nurses who show extraordinary clinical skill along with compassionate care.
Vetter has worked in healthcare for more than 40 years. She started her career as an LPN and then went to nursing school. “I go into every patient’s room and do the best I can. I want to help them get better and get their health back. I chose to work at HCA Florida Sarasota Doctors Hospital because I believe this is the best place for patients to get well,” said Vetter.
Patients and families feel her experience and passion for care. “The compassion she showed was natural and sincere, and it was clear that nursing is not just her job; it is who she is,” added the patient’s family member.
