For Dr. Bruni Neufeld, HCA Florida Brandon Hospital has always been part of her story.
That story began on April 14, 1999, when she was born at Brandon Hospital. Over the years, the hospital became more than just her birthplace. As the daughter of longtime local physician Dr. Brunilda Nazario, Bruni spent countless hours accompanying her mother on rounds, sitting at nurses’ stations, talking with caregivers and quietly observing the compassion and dedication that define healthcare.
Somewhere along the way, those moments sparked a calling.
“I grew up around medicine and around people who genuinely cared for others,” said Neufeld.
That passion deepened during a mission trip to the Dominican Republic, where Bruni discovered how meaningful it was to care for people during their most vulnerable moments. From there, the path to medicine became clear.
On April 18, 2026, just weeks before graduating from George Washington University School of Medicine, Bruni married her college sweetheart, Liam O’Grady. But as graduation day approached, the family was facing heartbreaking news.
Bruni’s beloved grandfather, Antonio “Papi” Nazario, the 89-year-old patriarch of the family, had become ill and was hospitalized at Brandon Hospital. Though he had looked forward to seeing his granddaughter graduate from medical school, the family realized he would not be physically able to attend the ceremony.
That’s when Liam had an idea. "If Papi can’t make it to graduation, let’s take the graduation to him.”
With the help of family and the hospital care team, plans quickly came together. Loved ones gathered inside Antonio’s hospital room, decorating the space and streaming the graduation ceremony live on the television. Surrounded by family, Dr. Neufeld walked across her own makeshift “stage” while her mother, Dr. Nazario, proudly “hooded” her daughter beside her grandfather’s hospital bed.
The room filled with tears, laughter and overwhelming pride. Hospital caregivers who witnessed the moment were deeply moved by the family’s love, resilience and selflessness.
“It was an incredible reminder of why we do what we do,” said Tiffany Lawrence-Bradley, director of med surg at Brandon Hospital. “To witness multiple generations of a family celebrating such a meaningful milestone together inside these walls was truly unforgettable.”
For Dr. Neufeld, the moment represented far more than a medical school graduation. It was a celebration of family, legacy and the hospital that has quietly been woven into her life from the very beginning.
From being born at Brandon Hospital to spending her childhood alongside nurses and physicians, and now becoming a physician herself within the same halls where her grandfather was cared for, Dr. Neufeld’s journey has come full circle.
And for one unforgettable day, HCA Florida Brandon Hospital was honored to be part of the story once again. Dr. Neufeld will begin her residence in pediatric medicine this summer in Tampa surrounded by love from her beloved Nazario family.
Brandon Hospital will cheer her on as her journey continues.
