Community urged by HCA Florida Citrus Hospital to prepare as peak hurricane season approaches
Inverness, FL — As Florida enters the peak of hurricane season, HCA Florida Citrus Hospital is reminding residents to take proactive steps to protect themselves, their families, and their health. With the lessons of last year’s back-to-back storms still fresh, preparedness is more important than ever.
“We know how quickly conditions can change during hurricane season,” said Lisa Nummi, CEO of HCA Florida Citrus Hospital. “Our hospital is committed to being here for our community before, during, and after a storm, but we also encourage every household to take steps now to prepare. A little planning today can make a lifesaving difference tomorrow.”
The hospital recommends residents:
- Get a kit: Build an emergency kit with essentials like one gallon of water per person per day, non-perishable food, a flashlight, battery-powered radio, first aid supplies, medications, hygiene items, and copies of important documents. Include items for infants, pets, and personal medical needs.
- Make a plan: Know how to reunite with family if separated, where to evacuate, and how your child’s school and your workplace will respond in an emergency.
- Be informed: Stay connected to local emergency alerts and know how to access evacuation orders and safety updates.
Dr. Marc Armstrong, emergency room physician at HCA Florida Citrus Hospital, emphasized the importance of health preparedness: “Storms can disrupt access to medical care, so it’s vital to plan ahead. Make sure you have a seven day supply of medications, backup power for medical devices, and a list of emergency contacts. If you’re caring for an infant, remember that breast milk can remain viable for up to four hours at room temperature and longer if stored in a cooler with ice packs.”
Dr. Armstrong also encourages residents to seek medical attention promptly if they experience injuries or health concerns during or after a storm. “Our ER remains open and ready to serve, even in the most challenging conditions.”
Hospital staff: Ready to serve, no matter the storm
When hurricanes threaten our region, HCA Florida Citrus Hospital activates its emergency preparedness protocols to ensure uninterrupted care for the community. Hospital employees play a critical role in this response, often reporting to work ahead of the storm and remaining on-site throughout its duration to provide essential medical services.
“Our team is incredibly dedicated,” said CEO Lisa Nummi. “When a hurricane is approaching, our staff members pack their ‘go bags,’ leave their families in safe hands, and come to the hospital to ensure we’re ready to care for anyone who needs us.”
Employees are divided into designated teams — typically referred to as Team A and Team B — to ensure continuous coverage. Team A reports before the storm and stays on-site during the event, while Team B arrives after the storm passes to relieve their colleagues and continue care. This system ensures that the hospital remains fully operational, even in the most challenging conditions.
Dr. Armstrong added, “Staff is provided with supplies, sleeping arrangements, and food so they can focus on what matters most: caring for patients. It’s a coordinated effort that reflects the hospital’s commitment to the safety and wellbeing of our community.”
