Pharmacy Residency Program at HCA Florida Trinity Hospital

The mission of the HCA Florida Trinity Hospital PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Program is to develop confident and competent pharmacists who are able to manage all aspects of medication management for the patients they serve. The program is dedicated to developing future pharmacy clinicians and leaders by promoting confidence, leadership and professional skills in pharmaceutical care.

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Applicants must be graduates or candidates for graduation from an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited degree program (or one in process of pursuing accreditation) or have a Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Committee (FPGEC) certificate from the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP).
• GPA ≥3.0 for pharmacy school, or no “Fails” in any classes for pass/fail pharmacy schools.
• Licensed or eligible to apply for a license to practice pharmacy in the state of Florida. All residents MUST be licensed in the state of Florida within 90 days of the start of the residency year.
• Participate in the ASHP Residency Matching Program
• Applicants must complete application and submit to PhORCASby January 4th, and include:

• Letter of intent
• Copy of pharmacy school transcript
• Three professional references/evaluations submitted via PhORCAS
• Curriculum vitae

• If selected, an on-site interview is required for Phase I of the Match. If necessary, a virtual interview is required for Phase II of the Match.

Selection Process

The HCA Florida Trinity Hospital PGY1 Residency Program participates in the ASHP Resident Matching program. The residency program participates in the ASHP residency showcase as the primary recruiting forum and uses the online admissions management software platform, PhORCAS to support the residency recruiting process. The deadline for receipt of application materials is January 4th.

The following are examples of items considered during the selection process:

• Professional competence based on clinical APPE rotations, as well as work, presentation, research, biomedical writing/publishing and practical experience
• Collegiate achievements
• Communication skills represented in the letter of intent, professional references, APPE, academic, and interview performance
• Leadership potential as indicated by the nature and extent of participation in professional societies, community or public services, and social activities
• Ability to work cooperatively with others

Residents will complete a total of 9 rotations, each 5 weeks long. Core required rotations include the following:

• Orientation
• Internal Medicine I
• Internal Medicine II
• Critical Care
• Infectious Disease I
• Neonatal ICU
• Pharmacy Administration

Elective rotations may include but are not limited to the following (two 5 week long rotations):

• Emergency Medicine
• Emergency Medicine II- Transitions of Care
• Surgery/OR
• Critical Care II
• Internal Medicine III- Cardiology
• Infectious Disease III
• Pharmacy Administration II
• Additional electives may be offered off-site at other HCA West Florida Division Hospitals (pending availability), and include Pediatrics, Transplant, Burn and Medication Safety

• Major research/service project
• Manuscript of project, which must be eligible for journal publishing
• Poster presentation at ASHP Midyear Meeting
• Presentation at Florida Residency Conference
• One 1-hour Continuing education seminar to be presented across HCA West Florida Division
• One Medication use evaluation
• One drug class review
• Minimum of three journal clubs and three case presentations
• 10 in-services/ Graduate Medicine Education (GME) program presentations

Staffing Requirements

• Residents will staff every other weekend with one day off during the following week. Residents will also work in the central pharmacy one weekday every other week.
• Residents are required to staff one winter holiday (Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year’s)
• Moonlighting: Residents are not permitted to work additional shifts at HCA Florida Trinity Hospital. Moonlighting at outside facilities is STRONGLY discouraged and must be approved by the residency program director.

Detailed information about salary, benefits and amenities will be provided to pharmacy residents by Human Resources.

• Salary: $51,230 yearly
• Duration of appointment: One year, beginning on July 1st of the program year.
• Vacation and holiday leave: Each resident will receive Paid Time Off (PTO) according to HR policy HR.TR.007 Paid Time Off which equates to about 19 days for the entire year. PTO is to be used for all absences throughout the year to include but not limited to vacation, holidays and sick days. No more than 3 PTO days may be used during one rotation block.
• Sick and family leave: Sick leave is deducted from PTO. Residents are expected to notify co-workers and their respective preceptor or supervisor as early as possible when illness requires absence.
• Educational and professional leave: PTO will be used for all professional leave to travel to job interviews or visit other residency sites. Residents are expected to attend the American Society of Health-system Pharmacists (ASHP) Midyear Clinical Meeting as well as the Florida Residency Conference. Financial Assistance is provided for travel, meals and lodging expenses for these meetings.
• Residents are provided with a yearly $750 cafeteria stipend
• Health benefits: Residents are eligible for health benefits as full-time pharmacist employees of HCA Florida Trinity Hospital.
• Liability insurance: All pharmacy residents are covered under HCA Florida Trinity Hospital’s liability insurance policy. This insurance does not cover any other professional services at facilities outside of HCA Florida Trinity Hospital.
• Office space and resources: Office space for use by pharmacy residents is provided at each site. A laptop is also available for each resident. Residents will be given a stipend for purchase of scrubs and monogramed lab coats as per the hospital’s dress code.
• Discounts and amenities: Residents are eligible to receive a wide variety of entertainment, health and other discounts via HCARewards.
• Parking: Pharmacy residents park free in approved locations.
