HCA Florida North Florida Hospital is an American Society of Health System Pharmacist (ASHP) pre-candidate PGY-1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program.

The PGY-1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency program at HCA Florida North Florida Hospital is a year-long, full-time curriculum designed to provide residents with broad experiences to develop the clinical and interprofessional skills necessary to excel independently in practice. Residents function as key members of the healthcare team in various outpatient and inpatient settings, such as hospital-based outpatient pharmacy, transition of care at hospital admission and discharge, and geriatric primary care clinics. The intensive training involves residents participating in the following activities:

  • Prescription filling, patient counseling, and immunizations
  • Test and treat, diabetes education, and meds to beds
  • Medication reconciliation at hospital admission and discharge counseling
  • Designing, recommending, and managing drug treatment regimens for older adult patients
  • Completion of the teaching certificate program at the University of Florida College of Pharmacy
  • Precepting APPE students and pharmacy interns

Pharmacy residency purpose

The PGY-1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency program builds on the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for PGY-2 pharmacy residency training.

Pharmacist residency education and training in community-based practice aims to develop pharmacy leaders who are capable of improving the health of patients within the communities they serve. The primary purpose of this program is to foster the development of community-based pharmacist practitioners who are community-focused practice leaders, serving as an access point for care and having the skillset necessary to provide quality generalist patient care services wherever health and medication needs arise.
