Angela's story
Preparing to bring a newborn into the world can be an emotional time for a family. Adding a rare pregnancy condition heightened these emotions. The Gonzalez family is thankful for the team at Fort Walton-Destin Hospital for the extra care that pulled them through.
Angela and Anthony Gonzalez were thrilled to find out they were expecting their fourth child and were excited about their newest addition. Angela is no stranger to being a patient at Fort Walton-Destin Hospital as she experienced difficulties with her third pregnancy. Even still, Konnor was different. After her second trimester, everything took a turn for what seemed like could be the worst.
Angela found out she had a rare condition known as placenta accreta, a condition that occurs when the placenta attaches too deep in the uterine wall and can be life-threating for the mother. Angela’s case involved more than just Labor and Delivery. Vascular, urology, neurology and general surgery were all involved; truly a great example of the entire hospital team working together to achieve the safe delivery of Konnor and the well-being of Angela.
Anthony stated, “They did an amazing job explaining everything to us, but the unknown is the hardest part.” Three weeks being monitored in the hospital and being away from her other three children, aged 17, 15, and 3 was the hardest part.
However, these precautions were necessary as she had to be prepared to give birth via caesarean section at any moment. After three weeks being monitored in the hospital, Angela gave birth to their son Konnor, seven weeks early. Angela stated, “I had a great team here. The way they lined up everything, the way they dealt with everything, we couldn’t have been in better hands.”
Angela felt safe going into her surgery, even though she knew there was a possibly she might not come out. “I felt like I was in great hands. The little things they decided to do to take precautions is the reason I made it. I am so thankful.” Thank you to the Labor and Delivery Nurses and NICU staff who cared for Angela, Anthony and Konnor. Thank you for #caringlikefamily.
