HCA Florida Sarasota Doctors Hospital starts Internal Medicine Residency Program
The hospital will start accepting internal medical residents in July. The goal is to provide more primary care services for growing community.
Finding a primary care physician in Sarasota and Manatee counties can be a challenge. Because of the growing population, there is an increased need for well-trained physicians to serve the community. HCA Florida Sarasota Doctors Hospital just received approval from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) to train and educate internal medicine residents. The new program will accept 12 residents a year pursuing a career in internal medicine through the HCA Florida Healthcare/ USF Morsani College of Medicine GME. The resident physicians will learn and practice for three years at the hospital as part of their residency. Initial interviews to select residents have already started. The inaugural class will have orientation at the end of June and officially start on July 1, 2023.
“I can think of no greater calling and legacy than to teach and develop others who will carry the torch and hand it over to others long after we are gone,” said Michael Schandorf-Lartey, M.D., Program Director of Internal Medicine at HCA Florida Healthcare/USF Morsani College of Medicine GME.
The goal of the program is to train these residents to be strong advocates for their patients and retain them to serve the local community. The hospital is also making a significant financial investment for the new residency program including adding a medical simulation lab, high-tech classrooms and resident quarters on site. HCA Healthcare is the largest sponsor of GME training in the United States with 337 (ACGME) accredited programs, 5,334 residents and fellows, and 62 teaching hospitals across 16 states.
