HCA Florida Citrus Hospital urges families to prioritize water safety

Stay safe on the water during scallop season.

Inverness, FL  With scallop season in full swing and families flocking to the water, HCA Florida Citrus Hospital’s emergency room team is reminding the community of the importance of water safety to prevent drownings — a leading cause of accidental death for children.

“Our emergency department sees too many preventable water — related injuries each year,” said Dr. Jason Grabert, Emergency Room Medical Director at HCA Florida Citrus Hospital. “Drownings can happen in seconds, and often without a sound. With simple precautions, we can help save lives.”

Drowning Prevention Tips from the ER Team:

  • Supervise Constantly: Never take your eyes off children when they are in or near water. Designate a responsible, sober adult as a “water watcher.”
  • Learn CPR: Immediate CPR can save lives before emergency responders arrive.
  • Teach Swimming Skills Early: Enroll children in age — appropriate swim lessons, but never rely on them alone for safety.
  • Avoid Distractions: Put phones away and remain attentive. Distracted supervision is one of the most common factors in drowning cases.
  • Use Life Jackets: Especially for children and inexperienced swimmers in open water. Floaties and pool noodles are not substitutes.
  • Know the Signs: Drowning is silent. Watch for head low in the water, gasping, or trying to roll over.
  • Install Barriers: Use pool fencing at least four feet high with self — closing, self — latching gates.

Drowning can occur in less than 60 seconds, often silently. “Education and prevention are powerful,” said Dr. Grabert. “Whether you're at the pool, the beach, or just near a bathtub, knowing what to look for and how to respond can mean the difference between life and death. With Citrus County reporting three child drownings in 2023, these aren’t just numbers, they’re lives we can protect.”

If a water emergency does occur, call 911 immediately and begin CPR if someone is unresponsive. HCA Florida Citrus Hospital's emergency room is open 24/7 and ready to provide rapid, expert care.
