Dr. Merchant is a physician in practice since 1978. He completed his medical education in Pune, India. Dr. Merchant completed a surgical residency at Sassoon Hospital in Pune, India and subsequently practiced as a surgeon at Aga Khan Hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Once arriving to New York City he entered the pediatric residency program at Brookdale Hospital Medical Center in Brooklyn where he held the position of Chief Resident.
