Description
Stroke is a serious public health concern in the United States. According to the American Heart Association, it is the nation’s fourth leading cause of death, with someone dying from stroke every three minutes and 14 seconds in 2023.
People at higher risk of stroke include those with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, carotid or other artery disease, transient ischemic attacks (TIAs), atrial fibrillation or other heart conditions, certain blood disorders, and sleep apnea. Risk also increases with age, especially after 55, and with a family history of stroke.
The good news is that these conditions are treatable. Working with your doctor to manage them, along with making healthy lifestyle changes, such as increasing physical activity, quitting smoking or vaping, avoiding illegal drug use, and limiting alcohol consumption, can significantly reduce your risk of stroke.
Learn more about stroke prevention and how to recognize the warning signs at our free community talk led by a board‑certified emergency medicine physician, Christopher Komurek, DO.
