What to know before your child's sports physical
Sports are an amazing way for your child to stay active and socially engaged. As they enter a new school year and new sports season, your child might try new activities or playing at a different level. Keeping them safe from injury during these times is a top priority. As the school year kicks off, a sports physical can help them start their season strong and protected from injury.
Physicals are required by many schools, leagues and camps to participate in sports and other activities. HCA Florida Healthcare is here to guide you through what to expect and how to prepare, so your child is ready to hit the field — safely. Learn what you need to know for a successful visit and healthy season for your child.

Why are sports physicals important?
The goal of sports physicals is to help determine whether it’s safe for your child to participate in sports. By evaluating their health, your child’s doctor can identify any underlying medical conditions that might pose a risk during their chosen sports.
After a sports physical, your child may be cleared to play, meaning they can participate in activities without restriction. They may also need some additional evaluations before they can be cleared. For example, if your child has a heart murmur, they may need to see a cardiologist for further testing before they can participate. Your child’s doctor may also note specific equipment they should wear when playing sports, such as safety glasses to protect their eyesight.
While a physical should ideally be done ahead of each new activity, most schools recommend one annually. Be sure to check with your child’s school or league for their specific requirements, including any forms that need to be completed after the visit.
What happens during a sports physical?
During a sports physical, the doctor will begin with a detailed medical history. It may help you to review your child’s health history, especially any cardiovascular issues, before your appointment. The provider will ask you about things like:
- Allergies
- Diet
- Family history
- Medications
- Previous injuries, including concussions
- Previous surgeries
Your child will also have a complete physical exam including:
- Checking the abdomen, including looking for a hernia in boys
- Checking the heart and lungs, including for heart murmurs
- Ear, nose and throat exam
- Joint and reflex evaluation
- Scoliosis test
- Taking height and weight
- Taking vital signs like blood pressure and pulse
- Vision test
Sports physicals are a great time for you to ask any questions about your child’s health and how to prevent injury during their sports season.
Who performs sports physicals?
Your child’s pediatrician can conduct their sports physical. You can also go to an urgent care clinic or pharmacy clinic to complete their exam. The school or league might also offer physicals on-site ahead of the sports season.
What’s the difference between a sports physical and well visit?
During your child’s annual appointment, they will have a comprehensive exam that evaluates their overall development, well-being and physical, mental and emotional health. They’ll also receive any vaccines they’re scheduled for. A sports physical, on the other hand, focuses whether your child is physically ready to participate in sports. It looks specifically at your child’s heart and orthopedic health specifically and helps make sure your child is healthy enough to engage in their chosen sports.
