Facilitators
Meet our pharmacy residency program facilitators
Our pharmacy residency program is made possible through the efforts of a group of highly skilled and knowledgeable facilitators:
Gail King
Gail King is the HCA Florida Putnam Hospital Director of Pharmacy. Here, she oversees both the Pharmacy Department and Pharmacy Residency program, creating and delivering patient-focused pharmaceutical care to help make us the best small hospital in Northeast Florida.
During her time with HCA Healthcare, she has been recognized both internally and externally by the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists (ASHP) for starting the small/rural pharmacy residency program.
During her 45-year pharmacy career, Gail has been Assistant Director of Pharmacy at HCA Florida Orange Park Hospital in Orange Park, Florida, as well as Director of Pharmacy at Citrus Memorial Hospital in Inverness, Florida.
She attended St. Louis College of Pharmacy for her BS in Pharmacy, then University of Kansas College of Pharmacy for her Pharm D and University of North Florida Coggin College of Business for her MBA. She currently lives in Saint Johns, Florida where her hobbies include music, reading, Bible study and hanging with friends and family. She is currently studying to obtain her associate degree in Christian counseling and she is a certified Christian financial counselor.
Christian Calderon
Christian Calderon graduated from the University of Florida College of Pharmacy in 2015. During his tenure, he was highly involved in student council and the Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity. As a result of the relationships built during clinical rotations, he was recruited as the first resident at HCA Florida Putnam Hospital lead by Dr. Gail King.
Currently, Dr. Calderon serves as Pharmacy Operations Manager and hopes to continue to serve this community by eventually becoming the Director of Pharmacy. He plans to continue growing his department's clinical presence in the hospital through stronger partnerships with all of his clinical peers.
Outside of work, he is President of his regional chapter of the Florida Society of Health-System Pharmacists (FSHP) and active in the Gainesville Graduate Chapter of ΚΨ as Vice-Regent. At home, he enjoys spending time with his wife Isabella and traveling to see friends whenever possible. He is an avid electric vehicle enthusiast and environmental activist. Dr. Calderon has three lovely pets: one dog, Crona, and two cats, Jynx and Emma.
Steven Tran
Steven Tran, PharmD, is the Residency Program Director and Infectious Disease Pharmacist at HCA Florida Putnam Hospital. He was born and raised in Ottawa, Canada, and immigrated to the United States at age eight. Dr. Tran graduated with his Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) from the University of Florida in 2014 and completed his PGY1 Residency at St. Vincent’s Medical Center Riverside in Jacksonville, Florida. Dr. Tran joined our staff in late 2015 as the Infectious Disease Pharmacist, taking on the role of the Residency Program Coordinator shortly thereafter. Dr. Tran is dedicated to the education of residents and students, and his pharmacy interests lie in optimization of care, infectious diseases, and education.
Josh Gilmore
Josh was born and raised in St. Augustine, Florida, with parents who both worked at the local hospital; his mother was the Director of Physical Therapy and his stepfather was an inpatient pharmacist. With a penchant for chemistry and the shadowing opportunities afforded by his parents' positions at the hospital, Josh pursued the pharmacy field by enrolling at the University of Florida, receiving a BS in Microbiology, while also being accepted at the LECOM School of Pharmacy in Bradenton, Florida. Josh completed pharmacy school in 2014 and became licensed in September of the same year.
Having forgone a year of residency in search of a staff pharmacy job in a hospital setting, Josh started at HCA Florida Putnam Hospital as a PRN staff pharmacist in November 2014. Currently, Josh acts as a facilitator for students and current residents, primarily in Internal Medicine and ICU rotations. He has also worked towards getting his Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS) certification, and would like to further specialize in Critical Care or Ambulatory Care. In his free time, he loves to travel, play/watch soccer, and participate in various outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, and kayaking.
Denise Armstrong
Denise, PharmD, was born and raised in Palatka, Florida and graduated from Palatka South High School in 1976 with honors. After becoming interested in pharmacy at a young age through a family member, Denise catered all of her high school and undergraduate classes towards eventually attending pharmacy school, eventually choosing Florida A&M University (FAMU) in Tallahassee, Florida.
Denise joined the Army ROTC while at FAMU and received a four-year army scholarship that allowed her to receive an army officer commission while serving four years as an active duty pharmacy officer at Fort Ord in Monterey Bay, California. While at Fort Ord, she began several innovative programs, including a monthly staff pharmacist newsletter that was distributed to all hospital healthcare providers, extending pharmacy hours from eighteen to twenty-four hours and implementing a local testing program for pharmacy technicians to ensure they could handle working the night shift independent of an onsite pharmacist.
Denise's passion is mentoring future pharmacists and empowering patients to take charge of their health. With over ten years of military/civil service, ten years in retail and ten years in hospital pharmacies, Denise finds all aspects of pharmacy rewarding, obtaining her PharmD to ensure that she is a more informed facilitator. Her personal hobbies include traveling, reading, baking, photography, and would like to be instrumental in starting at least two to three palliative care beds for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and congestive heart failure (CHF).
