Sandy Hults
83 year old Sandy Hults is testament to “it is better late than never”. Sandy, in her fifties, began race walking in 1993, drawn to the discipline and stamina the Olympic sport required. Her passion quickly turned into excellence, competing at her first world competition in Italy in 2007, and becoming a well-known name in the sport.
When Sandy was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007, her strength was tested in new ways. Determined not to let the diagnosis define her, Sandy tackled treatment head-on and resumed her active lifestyle. The experience deepened her commitment to health, wellness, and staying active.
When persistent knee pain threatened her mobility, Sandy turned to the orthopedic team at Oviedo Medical Center. Under the care of orthopedic surgeon Dr. Ron Hudanich, she underwent knee replacement surgeries on both knees — in September 2022 and December 2022. The procedures led to a remarkable comeback for Sandy, and today she has returned to the sport she loves.
“The care I received at Oviedo Medical Center was outstanding,” Sandy shared. “Thanks to Dr. Hudanich and the entire team, I was able to get back to what I love — walking, moving, and competing.”
With new knees and renewed energy, Sandy’s ambitions are global, with upcoming competitions across the United States and Korea.
In an extraordinary moment this past March, Sandy proved that age and adversity are no match for her determination — winning 1st place in the World Masters Athletics event.
Sandy Hults’ story is a message of hope to anyone facing a diagnosis, surgery, or setback. Thanks to the expert care at Oviedo Medical Center, and a resilient spirit, she continues to show the world that no matter your age or the challenges you face, it’s never too late to walk your path — with strength, purpose, and joy.
