Turning a passion for science into 39 years of service
When Sue Evert walked into HCA Florida Englewood Hospital in April 1986 as a young lab technologist, she had no idea she was beginning a lifelong journey. Nearly four decades later, Sue serves as our Laboratory Director, a role she’s held since 1998, leading a team that is as close-knit as family.
Sue’s passion for science began in high school, inspired by a visit to a medical laboratory. “I was hooked,” she said. “I originally planned to go into cancer research, but I chose hospital work because of the patient connection. Knowing that accurate, timely results directly impact patient care keeps me focused.”
That sense of purpose, and her team, are what kept her here. “My lab colleagues are my family,” Sue said. “Most of us have been together for years, and even those who retire or move away remain part of that family.”
Sue has witnessed tremendous growth, from ER expansions to the opening of Wellen Park ER. “The hospital has changed so much, and soon our lab space will too,” she said. “Through it all, the strong relationships between departments have stayed the same.”
Outside the lab, Sue treasures time with her husband and two sons. Her advice for newcomers? “Be flexible and open to working together. Listen and embrace the culture. Real change takes time.”
As we celebrate 40 years, Sue reflects on her own milestone: “I’ve had opportunities to leave, but my ties to this team and community are too strong. Seeing friends and church members as patients reminds me why this work matters.”
Thank you, Sue, for 39 years of dedication and leadership.
