HCA Florida Trinity Hospital performed its one hundredth single-port robotic thoracic surgery in Tampa Bay on Monday, June 29 highlighting another minimally invasive thoracic surgery advancement for the facility. Thoracic surgeon Mathew Ninan, MD, successfully completed this single-port surgery on a patient using the advance robotic technology.
"Our team has now performed over 100 of these very minimally invasive procedures, and we are now the leading program in the southern United States. This new technology allows us to perform lung cancer surgery through a single 2-inch incision instead of multiple small incisions that we have traditionally done. To reduce pain and discomfort, we now access the chest through an abdominal incision, and avoid going in between the ribs. I am excited to offer this to my patients to improve the overall patient experience,” explained Dr. Ninan.
Traditional thoracic surgery involves four separate incisions through the sides of the chest. The single-port robotic technology allows for the procedure to be done through one incision just above the abdomen, providing the surgeon with better visibility and patients experience less pain, quicker recovery and better cosmetic results.
“Congratulations to Dr. Ninan and our outstanding surgical team on reaching the milestone of performing 100 single-port robotic thoracic procedures," said Mike Irvin, CEO HCA Florida Trinity Hospital. "This achievement reflects our commitment to staying at the forefront of surgical innovation and providing patients with advanced treatment options that support exceptional outcomes and recovery.”
