South Tampa Hospital recognizes Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month
September is Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month and The Hospital for Endocrine Surgery, a part of HCA Florida South Tampa Hospital is spotlighting the importance of early detection and advanced treatment options.
Three of the hospital’s expert thyroid surgeons were featured on WFLA Daytime Television and Bloom TV. Dr. Rashmi Roy emphasized the importance of routine neck checks for early detection of thyroid cancer. Dr. Eyas Alkhalili, and Dr. Joshua Ziehm provided information about surgical options, including scarless robotic surgery.
“Thyroid cancer affects women three times more than men and it’s becoming more common,” stated Dr. Roy, thyroid surgeon at the Hospital for Endocrine Surgery. “If women are aware of this, they are more likely to obtain an early diagnosis and cure.”
“The good news about thyroid cancer is that overall, this type of cancer has an excellent prognosis when caught early, with a 95% cure rate,” stated Dr. Alkhalili, thyroid surgeon at the Hospital for Endocrine Surgery. “There are many women in their thirties and forties affected by thyroid cancer and surgery doesn’t have to leave a scar across their neck. Robotic techniques allow surgeons to remove the thyroid through small incisions hidden under the arm.”
“Thyroid surgery today is highly effective and safe when performed by an experienced surgeon,” added thyroid surgeon Dr. Ziehm. “Outcomes are excellent with proper treatment.”
At the Hospital for Endocrine Surgery, the surgical team is at the forefront of innovation, offering patients multiple treatment options based upon each individual’s needs. The hospital offers both traditional and scarless robotic thyroid surgery and serves as a worldwide destination for endocrine surgery, focused on optimal outcomes in thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal tumors and cancers.
