Sarasota, FL — HCA Florida Sarasota Doctors Hospital welcomed 12 new resident physicians during a white coat ceremony Thursday, July 2, marking an important milestone in their medical training.
During the ceremony, the new doctors recited the Hippocratic Oath and received their white coats. The residents have come from medical schools around the world to train in Sarasota.
Dr. Michael Schandorf-Lartey, program director of internal medicine, told the new residents that their white coats represent identity, trust, expertise and accountability. “This coat is a mark of your identity. It represents trust that patients have in you as a physician, and we have a responsibility to maintain that trust. This also shows that you are a professional, an expert and that you are accountable to many different organizations and of all the things you do, you are accountable to the public,” Dr. Schandorf-Lartey said.
Following the ceremony, the hospital hosted a tour of its expanded Graduate Medical Education learning space for residents. The new space includes more than 6,000 square feet of high-tech simulation areas, including lifelike patient simulators used to practice clinical scenarios, an expanded classroom and additional spaces to support learning and well-being for residents as they train.
These events also reflect the continued growth of the hospital’s residency programs. This year, the hospital is launching a transitional year program with five residents. The hospital also recently celebrated its first graduating class of resident physicians.
