St. Petersburg, FL — HCA Florida Pasadena Hospital recently hosted a well-attended community seminar focused on understanding and managing knee and hip pain — two of the most common issues affecting mobility and quality of life, especially among older adults.

Led by Dr. Patrick Mixa, the presentation provided attendees with valuable insights into the causes, diagnosis and treatment options for joint pain. The seminar began with a discussion on knee pain, often caused by conditions such as osteoarthritis, tendonitis, bursitis or injuries like meniscus tears. The conversation then shifted to hip pain, which frequently results from osteoarthritis, bursitis, fractures or referred pain from the spine.

“Your hips and knees are key parts to your daily adventures,” said Patrick Mixa, MD, orthopedic surgeon, HCA Florida Pasadena Hospital. “To stay active, consider low-impact activities like swimming or yoga to keep your joints flexible. Conservative management with medications, injections, therapy and assistive devices may be the first steps to pain relief or injury recovery. When needed, surgical interventions such as arthroscopy or joint replacement may be necessary to maintain your daily activities.”

The seminar emphasized the importance of accurate diagnosis through physical exams and imaging, followed by a stepwise approach to treatment. Conservative options such as weight management, physical therapy, medications and assistive devices are often effective in managing symptoms and delaying the need for surgery. When surgery is necessary, modern techniques in joint replacement and arthroscopy offer safe and effective solutions with shorter recovery times.

Attendees were encouraged to stay proactive about their joint health, maintain a healthy weight and consult with orthopedic specialists to develop personalized treatment plans.

HCA Florida Pasadena Hospital remains committed to empowering the community with knowledge and resources to support lifelong mobility and wellness.
