Heated Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy Now a Treatment Option

Largo Medical Center has expanded their treatment offerings for select patients who have been diagnosed with abdominal cancer including but not limited to colon, ovarian, gastric, and appendix cancers. Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) is a procedure that is performed in the operating room, following a cytoreductive surgery which physically removes tumors. The HIPEC procedure continuously circulates a heated sterile solution that contains a chemotherapeutic agent throughout the abdominal cavity. The solution can directly penetrate diseased tumors in an attempt to kill microscopic cancer cells.

“The ability to now be the only facility in the area performing heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy for patients with advanced peritoneal based cancer is an enormous step forward. Advanced surgical care for cancer patients is typically paramount to cure for most and offers a new and exciting window of hope for this unique population” stated Ronald Chamberlain, MD, MPA, FACS.

While Dr. Chamberlain has performed hundreds of this type of procedure in previous roles, the surgical team at Largo Medical Center performed its first HIPEC procedure this week.
