Transplant intensive care unit expanded at HCA Florida Largo Hospital to meet growing patient needs
HCA Florida Largo Hospital has expanded its Transplant Intensive Care Unit (TICU), tripling capacity with eight new beds for a total of 12 specialized TICU beds. This brings the hospital’s overall ICU capacity to 54 beds.
The growth of the TICU reflects the significant increase in patient volume and the complexity of care provided through Largo Hospital’s advanced organ failure and transplant programs, including kidney, liver, and heart transplantation.
“Expanding our TICU allows us to care for more patients facing advanced organ failure and in need of life-saving transplants,” said Sebastian Strom, MD, chief executive officer of HCA Florida Largo Hospital. “This investment ensures our community continues to have access to the most specialized care.”
The hospital recently celebrated the expansion with a ribbon-cutting ceremony that included physicians, staff and administration. Among the special guests was Nicole Buckingham, a recent liver transplant recipient who has since joined Largo Hospital as a physical therapist on the rehabilitation team. Her inspiring story reflects the mission of the hospital’s transplant program — to not only restore health but also to empower patients to thrive after their recovery.
