Shared Governance

Shared governance is a system that promotes inclusive and shared decision-making among nurses in an organization. It is based on principles of partnership, equity, accountability and ownership. It aims to foster cooperation, leadership, creativity and quality in our Hospital.

What are Professional Practice Councils?

Professional Practice Councils are decision-making bodies in which nurses participate in determining nursing specific goals and priorities and make decisions to affect nursing practice, patient care or other aspects of professional practice.   These councils are comprised of interdepartmental teams which represent nursing units and departments within the hospital as well as varying levels of education and specialties.  The unit councils come together to help govern nursing practice at HCA Florida Palms West Hospital.

DAISY Award

“DAISY” is an acronym for Diseases Affecting the Immune System. The DAISY Award was created to honor nurses for the extraordinary, compassionate contributions they make every day, going above and beyond expectations in both science and sensitivity.

The DAISY Foundation was established by family members of Patrick Barnes, who died at the age of 33 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). The incredibly compassionate nursing care Patrick received, even when he was intubated and unaware, inspired his family to create the Daisy Foundation. Nurses may be nominated for this prestigious award by patients, families, and colleagues.

The DAISY “Shona Statue”

The DAISY Statue, also called the “Healer’s Touch”, represents the caring bond between a caregiver and a patient. Each statue is unique and handmade from stone by members of the Shona, an African tribe in Zimbabwe. The Shona are the largest ethnic Group in Zimbabwe, and they earn much of their income by carving these beautiful statues for the DAISY Foundation. Each statue is one of a kind, with its own unique color, shape, and character. The initials of the creator are engraved on the base of each figure.

DAISY award winners receive their own beautifully hand-crafted sculpture to commemorate the extraordinary honor of being an award recipient. To all of our DAISY winners: thank you for being extraordinary!
