Hospital for Endocrine Surgery recognizes Adrenal Disease Awareness Month
Tampa, Fla. — April is Adrenal Disease Awareness Month and the Hospital for Endocrine Surgery, a part of HCA Florida South Tampa Hospital, is raising awareness about adrenal diseases, such as Conn’s syndrome and Cushing Syndrome. With increased awareness about these often-misunderstood diseases, our community will become more knowledgeable about the importance of timely diagnosis and proper treatment.
Located on top of both kidneys, adrenal glands are small, triangular-shaped glands. They produce hormones that help regulate blood pressure, metabolism, and response to stress. When adrenal glands don’t produce enough hormones, this can lead to adrenal insufficiency. Adrenal glands may also develop nodules (or tumors) that can be benign or malignant, which can potentially produce excessive amounts of certain hormones leading to a variety of health issues.
“Adrenal disorders aren’t rare – they’re just rarely diagnosed,” said Dr. Tobias Carling, MD, PhD, adrenal surgeon at the Hospital for Endocrine Surgery. “Cushing Syndrome can be a life-changing disease that’s frequently missed in traditional evaluations. If you experience symptoms such as high blood pressure, headaches, tremors, or anxiety, these are indications that it may be time to seek the advice of a physician.”
During Adrenal Disease Awareness Month, the Hospital for Endocrine Surgery is emphasizing the importance of understanding the various types of adrenal disease and consulting with the most skilled and experienced medical professionals to determine the best course of treatment.
