HCA Florida Englewood Hospital recently received a very special donation from the Englewood Moose Lodge 1933. Each year, members of the lodge donate more than 600 plush Tommy the Moose dolls to the hospital. The dolls provide children and other patients with comfort during times of stress, uncertainty or anxiety.
Englewood Moose Lodge representative John Bienkowski explained, “It makes it a little easier for the kids and gives them something to hold on to, it seems to calm them. Tommy Moose is an international figure for the Moose Lodge.”
Recently, caregiver Rodney Singleton, Clinical Nurse Coordinator in the Englewood Hospital Recovery area brought his son to the Emergency Department for care. He said, “They were so kind to bring me the moose so that my son could have something to hold on to while he was getting his IV’s, it was a very scary time for him. It was very appreciated.”
“We use the Tommy Moose dolls to calm children down or even patients with dementia,” said Catherine Bienkowski, John’s daughter who works at the hospital as an Emergency Department Registrar. “We are so grateful to the Moose Lodge for their donation of the Moose dolls. To be able to give something to bring a smile to their face and make their experience a little better, really means a lot to our hospital.”
