Anthony and Victor Moreta

Two brothers experience rare kidney disease which led them both to kidney transplant at HCA Florida Largo Hospital Transplant Center.

Two brothers, two new kidneys.

Two brothers, Anthony and Victor Moreta, both led an active, healthy childhood playing sports and never exhibited any strong indicators for serious health issues growing up.  They come from a very close family, all living within a few minutes of each other.  During adulthood, both were diagnosed with a rare type of kidney disease, Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) that causes scarring in the filters of the kidneys. It’s a serious condition that can lead to kidney failure, which can only be treated with dialysis or kidney transplant.

While at work as a Tampa Police Officer, Victor suddenly became dehydrated and turned white in color.  He was taken to the nearest Emergency Room. There the team diagnosed him with kidney failure and advised him to seek additional care with a specialist for dialysis and later transplant.  After about 3 months of dialysis, he found a kidney donor match through a colleague of his and within 3 months he received his new kidney at HCA Florida Largo Hospital’s Transplant Center.

Just shortly after his brother’s successful transplant, Anthony was diagnosed with kidney failure and began his transplant journey by receiving dialysis for about a year.  During that time, Anthony and his family shared the news with friends and family and received an outpouring of willing donors.  About the time Anthony started to feel discouraged about finding a donor, his wife’s colleague was an approved match.

Today, you can find the brothers back to work and spending their spare time surrounded by family.
