Cardiopulmonary care

The heart and lungs are closely related, and an issue in one can affect the other. Also called cardiopulmonary diseases, we manage these disorders through treatments, such as medication, lung therapy, surgery and rehabilitative services.

Cardiopulmonary services in Inverness, Florida

We believe treatment for cardiopulmonary diseases shouldn't stop once you're discharged from the hospital.

That's why HCA Florida Citrus Hospital offers cardiopulmonary rehabilitation (rehab) programs after your hospital stay. When you participate in these programs, you can recover faster and have shorter inpatient visits in the future. We are proud to offer these programs in our hospital, at Citrus County's only hospital-based cardiac and pulmonary rehab center. Here, our cardiopulmonary specialists are dedicated to providing the rehabilitative cardiac and respiratory therapies you need to improve and restore your maximum abilities.

COPD treatment

COPD is a chronic lung disease in which airflow from the lungs becomes obstructed. COPD is permanent, and symptoms can become progressively more acute over time. Left untreated, COPD can also increase your risk of developing heart disease, lung cancer and some other conditions, such as the flu. However, COPD can be treatable and manageable.

COPD symptoms

The early warning signs of COPD include:

  • Persistent cough, which may produce clear, white, yellow or green mucus
  • Occasional shortness of breath

As the disease progresses, you may begin to notice:

  • Angina (chest pain)
  • Increased shortness of breath, which increases with your level of exertion
  • Needing to clear your throat of excess mucus first thing in the morning
  • Wheezing
Controlling COPD symptoms

Our cardiopulmonary team will teach you how to control your symptoms and risk factors, so you can navigate this challenging disease. We will help you achieve a good quality of life and reduce the risks of developing related conditions.

Cardiopulmonary rehabilitation therapy

You will be evaluated as part of our total heart care services and receive an individualized treatment plan based on your unique needs. Most patients visit the rehab center up to three times per week.

What to expect from our cardiac and pulmonary rehab programs

All rehabilitation sessions are closely supervised in a safe environment with the latest therapeutic equipment and led by our cardiopulmonary rehabilitation specialists.

Depending on your needs, you may participate in one or both of the following:

  • In our cardiac rehab program, you wear cardiac monitors throughout your exercise sessions while our specialists carefully monitor your blood pressure and heart rate.
  • In the pulmonary rehab program, your oxygen levels are monitored during your sessions. Equally important is the emphasis placed on health education so recovery can continue at home.

How to join our cardiopulmonary rehab program

You must be referred to the program by a physician. Our staff works closely with referring and consulting physicians and provides regular progress reports to ensure continuity of care.

Our center is conveniently located in the Medical Office Building at 131 S. Citrus Avenue, across the street from our main hospital.
