HCA Florida JFK North Hospital (“JFK North”) is committed to protecting the privacy and security of patient information, and as part of this commitment, we are making individuals aware of a recent incident that may have impacted their personal information.
On February 11, 2021, JFK North became aware that an employee was accused of inappropriately accessing patient identifying information from other area hospitals where the individual worked part time. JFK North immediately initiated an extensive investigation of its patient records. As a result of this investigation, JFK North identified that during the course of this individual’s job duties, the employee may have inappropriately accessed patient information between February 1, 2016 and June 18, 2021 in conjunction with discharge planning and home health placement. The following types of information pertaining to affected individuals may have been accessed: name, home address, date of birth, insurance information, social security number, as well as recent physician notes, physician orders, medications, and laboratory results.
Upon learning of this issue, JFK North immediately began an investigation and as a result of the investigative findings, terminated its employment of this individual and notified law enforcement. JFK North has also reviewed it processes and systems to further ensure that personal information is protected in a secured manner. JFK North notified affected individuals by mail and provided free credit monitoring for one year to these individuals. Law enforcement requested that JFK North delay notification in order that law enforcement could conduct their investigation confidentially. Law enforcement authorized JFK North to send notification on or after June 27, 2022.
While JFK North has identified less than 500 patients were involved, we are providing this notice to the community. Although we do not have reason to believe that patient or other personal information has been or will be misused for purposes of identity theft, we have advised affected individuals that they should remain vigilant for incidents of fraud and identity theft by regularly reviewing financial account statements and explanation of benefits and monitoring free credit reports for any unauthorized activity. If affected individuals discover any suspicious or unusual activity on their accounts, they should immediately notify their financial institution(s).
