When Danielle talks about the birth of her son, what shines through is the memory of how supported she felt during a long labor.
From the start, something felt different. “I had the most perfect start,” Danielle said, describing her arrival through the HCA Florida St. Lucie Hospital emergency room. Almost immediately, she felt at ease. “The nurses were wonderful. It felt like family. Like I felt I was in there with my sisters.”
That sense of being cared for would carry her through what became a 38-hour labor, one she had already committed to experiencing naturally. “My birth plan was to have just a natural, peaceful delivery,” she said. Labor, however, had its own challenges. By the time she reached nine centimeters, exhaustion hit hard.
But even in those toughest moments, she never felt alone. Her nurse stayed right with her, guiding her through wave after wave. “She didn’t catch attitude, she never stopped reassuring me, like, ‘It’s okay. You’re good,’” Danielle said.
And when things felt overwhelming, she wasn’t left to struggle through it. “She would stay in the room for as long as she needed to and bring me back down,” Danielle said.
For Danielle, that constant presence and the way the care team kept explaining what was happening helped her keep going. “The information that I kept receiving was helping me get through it.”
For her mother, Claudine, watching from the bedside, it was clear how much the care team shaped the experience. “They were patient with her. They took their time. They walked her through everything to keep her calm,” she said. “The room was just peaceful.”
That calm didn’t fade, even as the hours stretched on. Nurses kept checking in, talking Danielle through contractions and staying present. “They never left her for too long… they were there to talk her through and to wait with her,” Claudine recalled. In her eyes, that steady support is what made the outcome possible. “She was able to deliver after 38 hours without epidural, and I think that was just amazing.”
For Danielle, the support didn’t stop once her baby arrived. It continued in ways she didn’t expect. “The two nurses that helped me in the ER… the next day when I was postpartum, they paid me a visit,” she remembered. “They just wanted to check on you and baby. I felt so loved.”
Even routine care felt thoughtful and personal. Nurses explained everything without being asked, easing her mind in a vulnerable moment. “I didn’t have to ask any questions… the nurse checking her baby’s vitals would say, ‘Baby’s heartbeat is good, baby is good,’” Danielle said.
After 38 hours of labor, Danielle achieved exactly what she hoped for: a natural birth in a peaceful environment, surrounded by calm voices, steady reassurance and a team that never left her side, Danielle found the strength to keep going and the support to see it through.
