HCA Florida St. Lucie Hospital nurses and physician recognized for humanitarian work
HCA Florida St. Lucie Hospital proudly honors the extraordinary individuals who embody its mission of caring for and improving human life. Each year, the HCA Healthcare Awards of Distinction — including the Frist Humanitarian Award and the Excellence in Nursing Award — represent the highest recognition within the organization. These awards celebrate employees, physicians and volunteers whose dedication and compassion reflect the very best of HCA Healthcare’s culture and values.
The Frist Humanitarian Award recognizes those who demonstrate exceptional commitment to serving others and making a meaningful impact in their communities. The Excellence in Nursing Award honors nurses who consistently deliver outstanding care and uphold the highest standards of clinical practice.
HCA Florida St. Lucie Hospital is proud to recognize the following colleagues:
- Dr. Jon Brown, DO — Frist Humanitarian Physician. For more than five years, Dr. Brown has been a valued member of the medical staff at HCA Florida St. Lucie Hospital, bringing exceptional skill and compassion to every patient interaction. A board-certified general surgeon in both General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care, he is widely respected for his clinical excellence, professionalism and empathy. Beyond his surgical expertise, he serves as a dedicated mentor and educator, guiding Family Practice, Emergency Medicine and General Surgery residents with patience, enthusiasm and a deep passion for advancing medical knowledge. His commitment to humanitarian service extends far beyond the hospital walls — each year, he volunteers with Health Talents International in Guatemala, providing life-changing surgical care to underserved and indigenous communities who otherwise lack access to basic healthcare. During these mission trips, he performs hundreds of surgeries, treating patients with compassion, cultural respect and humility, transforming lives and restoring hope. Leading by example, he even brings his son along on these journeys, inspiring the next generation to embrace the values of compassion, service and giving.
- Mellissa Spinner, RN — Excellence in Nursing Award for Compassionate Care. Mellissa has been a dedicated member of the HCA Florida St. Lucie Hospital team for many years, consistently embodying the values of empathy, dignity and compassionate care. Every patient interaction is approached with genuine kindness and humility, creating a safe and comforting environment where patients feel seen, heard and valued. Her extraordinary compassion was evident when she cared for a veteran patient with no family, ensuring his birthday was celebrated with new clothes, his favorite ice cream cake and heartfelt recognition. Her generosity extends beyond patients to her colleagues, lifting spirits and building morale through thoughtful gestures such as birthday surprises, handmade quilts, mittens and wreaths for charitable events. Through her positivity and selflessness, she fosters a culture of unity and warmth within her department, strengthening teamwork and resilience for all.
- Rebecca Legg, RN — Excellence in Nursing Award for Professional Mentoring. As Clinical Support Coordinator at HCA Florida St. Lucie Hospital, Rebecca goes far beyond the expectations of her role to mentor and guide new nurses. Through real-time coaching, active listening and meaningful feedback, she empowers nurse residents to grow in confidence and skill. Her calm leadership shines in high-stress situations, where she turns critical events, such as stroke alerts, into teaching moments filled with encouragement. Even routine clinical tasks become opportunities for learning under her guidance, fostering independence and professional growth. Nurse residents describe her as their “angel,” a reflection of the compassion, positivity and grace she brings to every interaction. By nurturing the next generation of caregivers and elevating the standard of mentorship, she is shaping the future of nursing at HCA Florida St. Lucie Hospital.
