Adrenal surgery
Adrenal gland tumors can be cancerous (malignant) or non-cancerous (benign). The most common adrenal problems are the development of benign, non-cancerous tumors inside the adrenal gland. These tumors may cause an overproduction of adrenal hormones, known as “functional” adrenal tumors.
There are many different symptoms of adrenal tumors. We can help diagnose these symptoms appropriately and offer the best treatment plan for you based on your unique needs.
Minimally invasive adrenal gland surgery
In most cases, we will remove the tumors by surgically removing the adrenal gland in a procedure known as a laparoscopic adrenalectomy. In rarer cases, this minimally invasive approach may not be possible, and we may use a traditional ("open") adrenalectomy approach instead.
Parathyroid surgery
Surgery is the treatment for parathyroid disease or “hyperparathyroidism.” Hyperparathyroidism occurs when one (or more) of the four parathyroid glands in the neck develops a tumor. This results in too much parathyroid hormone (PTH), causing an abnormal increase in blood calcium levels. As a result, you may experience symptoms, such as chronic fatigue, moodiness and sometimes osteoporosis.
Minimally invasive hyperparathyroidism surgery
Our endocrine surgeons use the latest advances in technology to perform minimally invasive radio-guided parathyroid (MIRP) surgery. This approach is also known as “mini-parathyroid surgery.” Compared to the traditional surgical procedure, this minimally invasive surgery offers the following advantages:
- Better outcomes and cure rate — MIRP surgery has an exceptionally high cure rate and uses only minimal anesthesia, enabling you to recover quicker.
- Enhanced accuracy — Intraoperative nuclear imaging and mapping allow our surgeons to precisely visualize your parathyroid glands before starting surgery.
- Quicker surgery — The MIRP procedure takes less than 20 minutes, and you can often return home in approximately one to two hours following surgery.
- Safe, targeted access — The MIRP incision in the neck is approximately one inch, which allows us to reduce damage to nearby healthy tissue.
Thyroid surgery
The most common reason you may require part or all of your thyroid removed is because of a concerning mass or nodule. This means that a mass or nodule has been diagnosed as abnormal, cancerous, highly suspicious of being cancerous or “inconclusive.”
In some rarer cases, you may need your thyroid removed due to its extreme size, bothersome symptoms caused by size or over-functioning. It is sometimes also used as a treatment for difficult-to-control hyperthyroidism.
There are three basic types of thyroid surgery:
- Thyroid lobectomy — removal of one-half of the thyroid gland
- Sub-total thyroidectomy — removal of almost the entire thyroid, where only a small amount of the thyroid gland is left behind
- Total thyroidectomy — removal of the entire thyroid gland
Minimally invasive thyroid surgery
Most thyroid surgery is performed through a small incision on the lower neck. However, we offer “scarless” thyroid surgery techniques, including robotic and transoral approaches. This enables you to have a quicker recovery time. It also provides an improved cosmetic result, since the scar is not on the front of your throat but hidden, typically in the armpit.
