A team from HCA Florida Sarasota Doctors Hospital recently participated in the Savage Race in Dade City, Florida. The mud and obstacle run was 6.8 miles long and featured more than 25 obstacles. The team worked together to scale steep walls, swim through frigid ice baths and crawl through mud and nets. One of the main challenges was the Colossus obstacle. The group had to climb a 16-foot-high quarter pipe ramp followed by a free-fall water slide. Those who couldn’t make it up the obstacle had to be pulled by rope by fellow teammates.

Bill English, chief financial officer at HCA Florida Sarasota Doctors Hospital, was on the team and said, “Days later and I am still sore, but it was a great experience. Everyone had a good attitude. My favorite part was jumping over hot coals and crossing the finish line together.”

The goal of the Savage Race is to build teamwork while pushing your own limits. The team of nurses and hospital leaders trained in advance of the race and then used their problem solving skills, athletic abilities and cooperation to finish the race. Up next, the group is planning to tackle the Gasparilla Half Marathon race in February.
